Background of the study
Digital platforms have revolutionized the production and perception of speech, leading to significant phonological variation in online content. In Nigeria, TikTok and Instagram are popular for their unique approaches to audio communication. TikTok, known for its short-form videos and lip‑sync challenges, often features exaggerated and creative phonetic expressions, while Instagram incorporates audio in its stories and posts, blending natural speech with digital effects (Ibrahim, 2023). These platforms provide users with tools that alter pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm, resulting in distinctive phonological patterns that diverge from traditional speech norms. This study examines how Nigerian users adapt their phonetics in these digital environments, comparing the variations across TikTok and Instagram. It explores the influence of digital editing tools, cultural trends, and performance practices on speech production. The research aims to document these changes and evaluate their implications for conventional phonetic models, thereby enriching our understanding of digital phonetics and language evolution in Nigeria (Okafor, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although there is observable phonetic variation in Nigerian digital content, limited research has focused on a comparative analysis between TikTok and Instagram. Existing studies primarily emphasize visual content, neglecting the auditory modifications that contribute to phonological innovation (Chukwu, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of how digital tools and cultural practices interact to produce new speech patterns, thereby impeding the development of updated phonetic frameworks that account for digital influence (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative examination of phonological variation in Nigerian digital content. The insights will help update phonetic models to reflect digital trends, informing linguists and media scholars about the evolution of spoken language in the digital era (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to analyzing TikTok and Instagram audio content among Nigerian users; it excludes other platforms and offline speech contexts.
